I'm a day late, because I really couldn't keep my eyes open after a hard day's work yesterday. So, please accept my apologies and let me make amends by introducing to you some easy-listening. I never got to see them live, but Charlie Hunter is on my short-list of people to see before I croak. Born on the 23rd of May 1967 in Rhode Island, he was to become of the greater guitar players of his time (which is now!). He received guitar lessors from Joe Satriani en started playing on a 8-string guitar, on which he plays the basslines, rhythm guitar and solos. Nowadays he switched to a 7-string guitar and a Hughes & Kettner Tube Rotosphere with which he achieved to imitate a sound similar to a Hammond organ.
He started out his musical carreer in The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, of which this is the first video:
Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy - California Uber Alles
After that he quickly went the way of jazz and made a couple of albums either as the Charlie Hunter Trio or Charlie Hunter Quartet. I will now post a couple of his songs, and I hope you like them as much as I do. It's something else, that's for sure.
Natty Dread
If 6 Was 9
Come As You Are
High Pockets and a Fanny Pack
That's it for this week. Please join me next week when I will dedicate this column to jodeling and Gregorian nasal chants... or something else entirely.
Cheers
Nargoth
That's the weirdest Dead Kennedy's cover I've ever heard, and I've heard some pretty weird DK covers.
ReplyDeleteDamn, I like where your column is headed. You're covering a lot of ground as far as genres and I'm enjoying the journey
ReplyDeleteI can't say I'm a huge fan of jazz, although I'm coming to appreciate New Orleans jazz because of the show Tremé.
If I'd heard the Cobain cover without the preamble and knowing the name, I would have just thought "Damn, I know I've heard that song somewhere. What is it?"
If only I had enough bandwith to stream those....
ReplyDeleteLooks like you can't just bring your internet download habits from Japan to Canada. Canada's Internet Service Provider can barely be called a "service" and they don't "provide" much of anything...
>_<
3 Gigs left on 50, and 14 days to go... I bet you guys I'm blasting past the limit even by controlling myself...
Fair Use Policy, isn't. I feel your pain, Kami.
ReplyDeleteI was getting ready to a "not my cup of tea" reply. Seeing the pictures and the word Jazz.
ReplyDeleteBut you managed to surprise me with the first song (loved it...).
Sadly i hated "natty dread" (damn jazz sucks...). But the riffs in "if 6 was 9" made up a lot again.
All in all i'm gonna end with "not my cup of tea" after all. But you made it quite a journey, as he can indeed hit those strings.
Good to see you took more effort again then last week. So apologies accepted. But can we have something a little more on the rock side of the plectrum next week? Or is this the wrong place for requests? =)
If we can request stuff, I'm going to request... humm...
ReplyDeleteELFEN HARD-ROCK MUSIC !!
Surprise me !
We can do Finntroll or Blind Guardian if you want. :D Not gonna touch Evanescent or Within Temptation or any other Efteling metal band, though. I have my pride.
ReplyDeleteoooooh blind guardian... now there is a blast from the past... seen them live once and missed out on another on graspop because they started playing at 3 fucking am...
ReplyDeleteOh and iola, narc isn't heading anywhere. At least that is the theme of his life so far. But then, who knows what influence ciz has on him ;-)
Wooooo !
ReplyDeleteThat 'Come as you are' cover was so awkward...
I couldn't hear it more than 60 seconds tho...
I love how this column generates commentary each week. Keep it up Narc!
ReplyDeleteWhat about Flogging Molly ?
ReplyDeletelol
