ScumFlash: Seasonal Greetings

I'm not much of an Xmas card sender in real life (the last and only time I did that was probably 15 years ago). But with a little help from Revliss (ty for the picture) and the power of the interwebs I can send all of you seasonal greetings through this blog. So consider yourselves lucky, because this is an unique event in the history of Ghetto.

I wish my lovely scum (Before you say anything: "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!") a great feeding frenzy and a good start of the new year. And I also want, on behalf of all the lowlifes from the Severed Tongue, to wish all our Bestest Buddies and especially our most Evil Archenemies a Merry Scumfest and a Backstabbing New Year.

Ps. If a little and ugly goblin enters your home through the chimney and mentions he is there for the presents, then that is most likely Alyxyn. DON'T feed him milk and cookies, but get him out of there as fast as you can. Because I’m pretty sure he isn’t there to bring you anything, but more likely to rob you blind. Don't say I didn't warn you...

FreshScumFlash: Veha Returned, A New Beginning

Well, it seems the end of the world missed it's appointment with the rest of us. Although the Horseman of the Apocalypse are still gathering. Ofcourse there already was AAylia for a long long time, and don't forget about the comic relief duo Alyxyn and Schnebbs (who probably ate their horse by now...). Recently the 3rd horseman knocked down our doors in the form of Oak, our long lost barman. And now there is the return of Veha... Lucky for us she was one day too late to ride out with the other 3 (yes Alyxyn and Schnebbs are too small to be considered a real horseman, so we count them as two halves...).

Veha (also known as Princess of the High Tower, Ruler of Ghosts and Dark Thoughts and Instigator of Mayhem) is a tiny level 181 warrior. She managed to fill out her scrapbook to 88.41% and currently rides a dragon. Don't be fooled by her size though. She is scummy to the bone and Master of bar ehm… “fights” in lack of a better word. Welcome Back Veha.

With the return of Veha our set of Australians is complete again. These were feared lieutenants of AAylia before… Holy crap... I just realized I'm singlehandedly rebuilding AAylia's army for her... Maybe the end IS near after all.

*Starts looking for a better hiding place just in case*

FreshScumFlash: Oak is Back, the End is Near

Who would ever thought it we would actually be thankful for an iPhone app. The Shakes & Fidget app for the iPhone is finally finished and with it came the return of Oak. A long lost soul that is so scummy that even the combined forces of Alyxyn and Schnebbs pale in comparison... So hide your booze and wenches for this pile of Australian nasty,  before it is too late.

Just for the record: he is a darkelf with an eye-patch, level 248 raptor riding scout with a scrapbook of 83,71%. If you encounter him, be extremely careful. he is probably loaded to the brim with explosive fluids. There is NO reward for catching him alive, because who in the hell would want to lock that up...

And while we are at it, here is the weather forecast for this week.

Welcome back Oak, you've been away waaaaaay too long. But as it seems just in time for the party (wait... I should have expected that...)

ScumFlash: NO MORE BABIES!

Scum,

As you know we keep track of your activity (being online, checking in etc.). Also we have a great babysitting service organised by Tofurkey. You might also know that we have a group of volunteers (although smaller then in the old times) that are willing to do the actual sitting (and yes Tofurkey is one of those). Furthermore, you might have noticed that it is almost the holiday season (you know, Xmas and new years). Now put it all together and what do you get?

WRONG!

It is the scummy holiday season for all of us and we don't want to burden a few with the toons of many... Starting this weekend for the period around Xmas and new years we'll not be taking babysit requests. Furthermore, we will understand if you miss check ins etc.. We'll try to keep the guildbattles rolling, but don't be surprised if we miss a couple. Have a good holiday season, things will turn back to normal after January 2 2013.

Grtz.

Apple Cider Caramels

A friend pointed this recipe out to me, she says to add more spices - allspice, cloves and cardamon, also try some chili's! She replaced half the oil with bacon fat, and it came out TO DIE FOR.

Caramels hold a special place in my heart. My family would make at least three or four pans full of the stuff, wrap it in wax paper and then colorful tissues, to make sure that everyone that enters the house would have one. Grandma says that it was a Danish (?) tradition that their family did, that it was bad luck to not have a gift for everyone that crossed the threshold of the house during the holiday season. I don't know if this is a family one of a Danish one. Anyone want to confirm?

Apple Cider Caramels
From The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook
Apple cider (sometimes called sweet or “soft” cider), as I’m referring to it here, is different from both apple juice and the hard, or alcoholic, fermented apple cider. It’s a fresh, unfiltered (it has sediment), raw apple juice — the juice literally pressed from fresh apples. It’s unpasteurized, and must be refrigerated, because it’s perishable. In the Northeast, I usually find it at farm stands and some grocery stores. I occasionally find vacuum- sealed bottles called apple cider in the juice aisle, but none of the bottled varieties that I’ve tried has the same delicate apple flavor as the more perishable stuff sold in the refrigerator section.
4 cups (945 ml) apple cider
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons flaky sea salt, such as Maldon, or less of a finer one
8 tablespoons (115 grams or 1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into chunks
1 cup (200 grams) granulated sugar
1/2 cup (110 grams) packed light brown sugar
1/3 cup (80 ml) heavy cream
Neutral oil for the knife
Boil the apple cider in a 3- to- 4- quart saucepan over high heat until it is reduced to a dark, thick syrup, between 1/3 and 1/2 cup in volume. This takes about 35 to 40 minutes on my stove. Stir occasionally.
Meanwhile, get your other ingredients in order, because you won’t have time to spare once the candy is cooking. Line the bottom and sides of an 8- inch straight- sided square metal baking pan with 2 long sheets of crisscrossed parchment. Set it aside. Stir the cinnamon and flaky salt together in a small dish.
Once you are finished reducing the apple cider, remove it from the heat and stir in the butter, sugars, and heavy cream. Return the pot to medium- high heat with a candy thermometer attached to the side, and let it boil until the thermometer reads 252 degrees, only about 5 minutes. Keep a close eye on it.
(Don’t have a candy or deep- fry thermometer? Have a bowl of very cold water ready, and cook the caramel until a tiny spoonful dropped into the water becomes firm, chewy, and able to be plied into a ball.)
Immediately remove caramel from heat, add the cinnamon- salt mixture, and give the caramel several stirs to distribute it evenly. Pour caramel into the prepared pan. Let it sit until cool and firm—about 2 hours, though it goes faster in the fridge. Once caramel is firm, use your parchment paper sling to transfer the block to a cutting board. Use a well- oiled knife, oiling it after each cut (trust me!), to cut the caramel into 1-by-1-inch squares. Wrap each one in a 4-inch square of waxed paper, twisting the sides to close. Caramels will be somewhat on the soft side at room temperature, and chewy/firm from the fridge.
Do ahead: Caramels keep, in an airtight container at room temperature, for two weeks, but really, good luck with that.
