As news of a bleak winter reaches us via media, courtesy of a La Niña effect blasting the west coast with record snowfalls, I find myself reaching for something a bit more light-hearted than the usual fare.  My main comics seem bogged down with srs bsns lately, although Richard over at Looking For Group managed to find time to insert a musical number.  I'm wanting pineapples and lotus flowers instead of the usual fare of hearty soup, if you follow me.

Enter Kukuburi by Ramón Pérez, who must have been a gifted color-outside-the-lines artist even at a tender age.  He just doesn't think in terms of 'normal,' preferring to imbue his rather outside-the-mainstream character with the ability to be the perfectly normal one in a world of topsy-turvy.

Narrated by her gecko, Mr. Bojangles, the story tells of a young woman slacking her way through life, arriving late for work, going through the daily humdrum of grabbing a cup of java on the way to work and delivering packages on her scooter.  All that changes one day when she opens a gate in a white picket fence and steps into another world ...

Although a talking Mr. Bojangles spooked Nadia momentarily, our plucky heroine settles into the groove, believing it to be all some sort of hit-her-head accident.  And then she meets her new nemesis.

He and other panels in the series allude to our gal having some sort of special power in this world, and our archvillian challenges her right off the get-go.  And what do the powers of good and evil use to move pawns and markers around the board?  Why, Battleship, of course.

I'm not going to tell you how it turns out ... I'll send you on over to Kukuburi to read it yourself.  Click the masthead below.

As of this writing,  Ramón Peréz has returned to updating the series on Tuesdays and Thursdays after a year long hiatus.  The other major project filling his days is a script for Jim Henson's Tale of Sand.  He was the co-author of the now defunct Butternut Squash and contributes occasionally to his own Pin Up Girls collection.   Warning:  the last link is not safe for work.

All in all, I think I'm settling in and getting ready for the winter doldrums quite nicely.  Now, if only I could find a cabana boy to mix fruity cocktails that come with little umbrellas, I'd be completely set.
