FreshScumFlash: ZPirate

It has been a very busy week. First we had Etrius Joining the Scumside. Then Alyxyn decided he was not gonna wait till I made him a happy 300 post and now we have another FreshScumFlash already.

Welcome to Zpirate. A level 201 Scout with a 90% scrapbook (close to 95% Zpirate, just work a bit harder on it). Let's hope we can keep her for a while. To say it in her own words:

"You will always remember this as the day you almost caught  ... me!"

Although I really think she will soon remember this day as the day she caught Scummyness... And the best of it is... there is no cure!

Tales of loathsome tyrants and prophesied saviors aren't nearly so appealing when you are a royal bastard with a prophecy hanging over your head.

Evonalé Yunan has never cared for tales of the aforementioned loathsome tyrants and prophesied saviors since it has been foretold that she will somehow free her grandmother's enslaved queendom. Yet she's merely a child, and her father is the powerful fire mage who subjugated the realm.

Evonalé has fled home, her two half-siblings, and her father.  Unfortunately, it's the middle of winter. Fortunately, following her mother's directions puts her in another king's hunting grounds. 

To Evonalé's bewilderment, that king picks her up and gives her a place in his palace. The prince seeks her out to tease and befriend. Then one of Cook's daughters starts teaching her magic, and a scullery maid proves herself immune to poison - making Evonalé realize that she isn't the only one with secrets.

Misti Wolankski says of herself .. "I've written speculative fiction as my primary hobby since I was a high school freshman, and now I've finally figured out that novel-writing thing. Reading web fiction online helped tremendously as an office administrator when I needed to de-stress on my 15-minute break. I'm not one for sitting in front of my computer reading a book when I could be gaming and catching up with my friends.  Yet .. this one is remarkably easy to read.  Short chapters and a first-person tale draw you smoothly into the story, which while familiar in basic plot, shows promise of an author who is not confined by rote.   Its not done in a comic format, its honest to goodness writing.  Misti isn't an accomplished writer, from what I can tell; there are grammatical errors and sometimes awkward situations to move the plot along.  What does come across is a sort of pure innocence and belief in the power of the words to tell a story larger than her world, and here she succeeds.  I think it will be wonderful to follow along and watch this writer develop.  

A Fistful of Fire has 79 chapters as of this writing, with more books to come.  Enjoy!

FreshScumFlash: Etrius

We seem to have caught something in Alyxyns fishing nets again. It was fighting and screaming while Al hauled him on board, but as soon as it saw a glance of our Ciciz he calmed down and even looks like he is enjoying himself here. (makes you wonder though... why was Ciz with Al?) So we decided to give him some new clothes and introduce him as our newest member: Etrius. A level 224 cat riding Warrior with a 87.18% scrapbook. Let's hope he is some fun. And seeing he isn't an American I have high hopes ;-) Long live our first Bulgarian Scum.

Hey Etrius, welcome to the Severed Tongue. If you like some random banter, I'm sure you will be right at home. And while you are here all new and fresh, perhaps you will be the one to think up our newest slogan!

ScumFlash: Making up our own damn rules!

Every Scum that doesn't recognize these words should be shot at sight. Seriously... Who are you and what are you doing in our guild? Today's post will be about our guild slogan. The above slogan shouldn't need an introduction. It was handed to us by our founding father Gob Bushsniper. Whom mysteriously vanished a long long time ago only leaving behind two bloody daggers ... (Or so our history books say).

Long term scum will recognize this saying, it was ours for as long as I can remember. Probably because we started using it when I became guildleader.. So that must be what? 5 years ago? 10? Pretty much forever? As I said, I can't remember... All I know is that we still use it on this website. It was the first thing everybody saw when they visited our guild through the hall of fame and we became famous for it. We actually had complaints about it from other Guild Leaders telling me I shouldn't call you scum. Oooh the good old times. We thought it would last forever!

That is, untill iola made this background for march. She didn't just do a background and a header, but gave it a slogan too. It looked great, was funny and very scummy indeed. So from that day our slogan has been:

I was kinda hoping she would continue to do so every month. And was already looking forward to her next great idea. But it was a one time thing. And that is why we are going to help her. Yes scum, YOU can suggest possible future slogans for the Severed Tongue in the comments below. If we have gathered enough we'll start a poll and let you decide wich ones are the best. Who knows, it might even inspire Iola for some future backgrounds!

And while we are at it, let's use this topic to thank Iola for her hard work on the scumbase and her amazing backgroundpictures and headers.Seriously, if you never did before, take a look at all the eye candy Iola made for us in the past year.

This week, we're taking a look at an adorable clay monster.  A clay monster who goes on bad dates, works in a bakery and lives with his mom.  Yea, he's got our sympathy already.

One of the things that makes Marlowe interesting is that he's rendered in clay.  The artist/sculptor Shin Yin Khor says of herself "I'm a Los Angeles area sculptor, scenic painter, prop builder and monster maker. My day job is more boring than all of the above.  I am inspired by monsters, tentacles, mediocre science fiction movies, bikes, Dungeons and Dragons, and really adorable cats."  Her blog is Sawdust Bear and you can see her Deviantart at Oddhatter.  Check them out .. you can see she's getting ready for San Diego Comic Con.  

But .. back to Marlowe.  He's a loser and he's huggable.  He'll make you remember the awful dates you've had, the weird relationship with your mom at times in your life .. yea, he'll remind you a bit of someone you know ... if not yourself.

Marlowe the Monster isn't always funny, but it is interesting to drop by and see what Marlowe is up to each week.  And to see the inspired and detailed work of Shin Yin Khor.

Drawing stickmen allows you a great deal of creative leeway that you couldn't get away with in a normal comic .. toilet humor, for example.   To wit ..
